FOR ALL WHO SEEK THE TRUTH:
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL’S NEW SERIES CHASING UFOs INVESTIGATES STORIES OF THE UNKNOWN
A Pioneering Team of Investigators Probe Reports of Alien Abduction, UFO Sightings and Military Cover-ups in New Eight-Part Series
Chasing UFOs Premieres Friday, June 29, at 9PM & 10PM ET/PT
(Washington, D.C. – Tuesday, May 22, 2012) Chris Carter’s famous X-Files slogan,
“The truth is out there,” is put to the test when a team of pioneering investigators pushes the limits to find the truth behind unexplained UFO sightings. These real-life “Scullys and Mulders” are not looking for more stories on extraterrestrial activity — they want answers. Comprising one believer, one skeptic and one undecided, the dynamic team collects video footage of unusual-shaped lights over Arizona, meets with an alleged alien abduction survivor in Colorado and even tracks glowing orbs near NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.
In National Geographic Channel’s (NGC) new eight-part series Chasing UFOs, premiering Friday, June 29, 2012, at 9 p.m. ET/PT, with a second all-new episode airing at 10 p.m. ET/PT, join these three thrill-seekers in their adventure-packed quest to explore alien-related mysteries. An encounter in New Mexico leads the team to the famed crash site in Roswell, where they challenge a possible military cover-up. And in Texas, the experts witness lights in the skies that leave them with new questions.
Are we being watched? Is the government hiding information on UFO happenings? Can this team use science and technology to explain mysterious sightings, or will the evidence truly be out of this world? These burning questions motivate our investigative team to travel far and probe deep into a number of strange encounters previously left unanswered.
Meet the first member of the Chasing UFOs investigative team: tech supervisor and lead researcher Erin Ryder. Ryder (as her friends call her) proves to be one tough-as-nails female with a passion for adventure. Her resume includes traversing some of the deadliest environments on earth — including scaling glaciers in Antarctica! Not only is Ryder a force to be reckoned with for her brains and brawn, but also for her industry-leading knowledge of all things tech, from thermal cameras to night vision she’s got the gadget for the job.
Ben McGee is an experienced geologist, radiation scientist and field explorer. He makes for a well-rounded team member with both a strong academic background as well as a history of unique hands-on experience, which includes suborbital scientist-astronaut training. Naturally a skeptic, Ben looks to collect and analyze physical data in order to reach concrete conclusions. Ben believes good science must not be tainted by predetermined views.
James Fox, also known as “UFOlogist,” is an innovative investigator and documentary producer searching for definitive evidence that can prove we are not alone. Once a skeptic but now turned firm believer, James hopes to help the world see the truth behind the mystery of UFOs. His research stems from government documents, news articles and eyewitness testimonials.
Premiere episodes include:
Chasing UFOs: Texas Is for Sightings – Series Premiere
Premieres: Friday, June 29, at 9 p.m. ET/PT
The saying, “Everything’s bigger in Texas” proves to be true when Ryder, James and Ben investigate reports of mysterious lights spotted in the skies over two Texas towns. The team begins tracking stories from more than 30 witnesses who all share similar testimonies — seeing strange lights in the sky. Once they have gathered information, they head to a clearing where sightings were reported … and Ryder thinks she spots something mysterious in the sky! Eager to solve the mystery, they meet up with pilot Steve Allen, who demonstrates how it would be possible to mistake two airplanes flying in formation for one massive object.
Chasing UFOs: Dirty Secrets – Series Premiere Continues
Premieres: Friday, June 29, at 10 p.m. ET/PT
Residents in central California fear they are being watched after witnessing unusual objects patrolling the night skies. Some say the government is using alien aircraft to spy on citizens. The team analyzes a witness’s video footage of the floating triangular object. They become even more anxious to investigate the rumors after hearing stories from people who claim they were followed after their encounter with the suspicious triangle of lights. The team comes across an underground tunnel, nearly has a run-in with authorities near the airport and even questions whether they themselves are being followed!
Chasing UFOs: Alien Cowboys
Premieres: Friday, July 6, at 10 p.m. ET/PT
This time Ryder, Ben and James head to the Colorado Rockies to investigate claims of animal mutilations and reports of abductions. These instances take place in San Luis Valley, a town with decades of history involving UFO sightings. Residents are eager to share their encounters with the team — everything from hovering green lights to speeding saucers. After spotting a few questionable lights in the night sky, Ryder, Ben and James meet with local ranchers to learn more about the animal mutilations. Then, they meet with an alleged alien abduction survivor who recounts his dramatic extraterrestrial experience.
Chasing UFOs: UFO Landing Zone?
Premieres: Friday, July 13, at 10 p.m. ET/PT
For decades, the skies above the desert sands of Roswell, N.M., have been home to thousands of reports of unidentified flying objects. But one particular home video has the Chasing UFOs team in hot pursuit of the truth. Does the mysterious video really show an actual crash landing of an alien spacecraft? Under cover of darkness and armed with night vision gear, Ryder, Ben and James scour the alleged crash site … and come across a surprising find that has them questioning a military cover-up.
Chasing UFOs: Abducted in Arizona
Premieres: Friday, July 20, at 10 p.m. ET/PT
Since 1993 UFO sightings have haunted some residents of Phoenix, Ariz. Reports from hundreds of people all note seeing a triangular formation of lights in the sky. Ryder, Ben and James start by watching the video footage captured in 1993 that also highlights a similar-shaped item floating above. The man who caught the sighting on video, Terry Connet, comes forward to explain just how enormous and eerily silent the object was. After the original Phoenix Lights incident, the military stated that it was simply flairs dropped from a nearby Air Force base; others believe it was skydivers. Unconvinced and willing to put the explanation to test, Ryder gets skydivers to perform a night jump wearing pyrotechnic flares.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL TO TWEET A REPLY TO INTELLIGENT LIFE ON OTHER PLANETS
Global Twitter Event Crowdsources Message From Human Race; @Reply Will Be Broadcast on 35th Anniversary of receiving The Wow! Signal
Special Twitter Message Timed to Premiere of New Series Chasing UFOs Premiering Friday, June 29 on the National Geographic Channel
NEW YORK, NY and WASHINGTON, DC (June 8, 2012) – National Geographic Channel announced today the launch of a bold new social experiment: to crowdsource a reply from humankind to our intergalactic neighbors. This project provides a long-overdue response to The Wow! Signal, a 72-second mysterious transmission from space detected by SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) exactly 35 years ago.
“If The Wow! Signal really was a cosmic ‘tweet’ from our nearest neighbors, we think it’s high time we organized an @reply,” says Christopher Albert, SVP, Global Communications and Talent Relations at National Geographic Channel.
On June 29th from 8PM ET to midnight PT –coinciding with the premiere of the network’s new series, Chasing UFOs— National Geographic Channel will host a global Twitter event to collect messages from all corners of Planet Earth. All messages tagged with the hashtag #ChasingUFOs will be rolled into a cosmic @reply.
In addition, the network is inviting special VIPs to contribute 72-second video messages as part of the @reply. This collection of curated videos offer a cross section of art, culture and conversation – celebrities, writers, artists, filmmakers, musicians and scientists.
The program culminates on August 15th –the 35th anniversary of The Wow! Signal– when the tweets and videos will be transmitted into space using a radar transmission facility.
The original Wow Signal was detected from a smaller observatory at Ohio State University in 1977. The signal provided such an extreme burst of energy – exhibiting many of the characteristics expected from potential alien contact – that the researcher who discovered it wrote “Wow!” in the margin (giving the signal it’s unofficial name). Since then, it has continued to be the subject of academic debate, and remains one of the strongest unexplained signals ever detected.
“In Chasing UFOs, we set out to uncover the truth — investigating and dissecting some of the most mysterious sightings on the planet. Our adventures paint an entirely new picture and will challenge what people believe about life and what’s out there” says Erin Ryder, tech supervisor and one of the three investigators featured in the new series. “This is a perfect social experiment to compliment the launch of the show. I think even if you are skeptical, you might want to think about what to say if we do in fact have alien neighbors!”
Our Partners
The Wow! Reply will capture all tweets using the hashtag #ChasingUFOs that are published from 8pm ET to midnight PT on June 29th, using licensed technology developed by digital artists Scott Kildall and Nathaniel Stern, who plan to use their platform to send more tweets into space later in the year.
